Are Porcelain Veneers in Frisco Permanent & How Long Do They Last?

Close-up of a beautiful smile Did you know that the first porcelain veneers were created by a Hollywood dentist around 90 years ago? They were temporarily placed on film stars to give them a “Hollywood smile” while they were shooting their scenes, only to be taken off at the end of the shoot. Thankfully, porcelain veneers in Frisco have come a long way since then! Now, everyone can use veneers to cover their smile imperfections and have the smile they’ve always wanted – and instead of staying on for hours, they now stay on for years. But even though they’re more permanent than they used to be, veneers don’t last forever. Like all dental work, they last much longer with proper maintenance. Learn more below about why veneers don’t last forever and how you can extend their lifespan as much as possible!

How Do Porcelain Veneers Work and How Long Do They Last?

Porcelain veneers are strong, thin “shells” of porcelain that cover the entire front surface of the teeth to completely change their appearance. After a very thin layer of enamel is removed (to accommodate the thickness of the veneer), they’re cemented into place to provide a semi-permanent result.

Just as natural teeth are subject to wear-and-tear like chips or small cracks, porcelain veneers can be damaged as well. But, since they’re very strong, they can last an average of 10-20 years with the right care and maintenance!

What Can You Do To Maintain Your Porcelain Veneers?

Here’s what you can do to extend the life of your veneers and keep them looking fantastic for as long as possible:

  • Maintain good hygiene habits to keep the natural tooth structure that your veneers are adhered to clean and healthy. Brush and floss each day using a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive toothpaste, such as a gel formula. Avoid whitening formulas, which are too abrasive and can scratch the surface of your veneers.
  • See a cosmetic dentist in Frisco for regular checkups and cleanings so that any small problems can be caught and treated as early as possible.
  • If you clench and grind, wear a night guard.
  • Avoid chewing on anything hard like ice or hard candies. Also, be sure to cut hard foods such as apples into pieces rather than biting directly into them.

Remember, all dental work must be replaced at some point. But, with these tips and tricks, you can enjoy your porcelain veneers for as long as possible!
