Will Porcelain Veneers Look Like My Real Teeth?

woman with pretty smileBy now, most everyone has heard of porcelain veneers in Frisco. Veneers are the treatment of choice among celebrities, whose careers depend on maintaining their looks. But do veneers look “natural?” And are they a true long-term solution to cosmetic problems? Knowing the answers to these questions is important before deciding which form of restoration is best for your needs.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Ask most people what aspect of their appearance causes them the most dissatisfaction and they’ll probably mention their teeth; and that’s understandable. Few of us are born with a perfect smile. Add in the effects of aging, nervous tension, and lifestyle factors and it’s easy to see how anyone’s pearly whites can take a beating over time.

Porcelain veneers were developed to address this problem. Veneers are a moderate approach to dental restoration, one which steers a path in between whitening treatments and more extensive therapies such as crowns, bridges and implants. Here’s how they work:

  • Your dentist uses an etching solution to gently remove a micro-thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth. He or she will also create a series of digital images that will be used to create your permanent veneers. This information will go to a dental lab.
  • A few days later you will have a follow-up appointment in which your dentist fits your veneers to your teeth. Assuming everything looks good, he or she will affix the restoration using a special light-activated bonding agent.
  • Caring for your veneers is easy. You should brush and floss as normal. Your dentist may recommend that you limit your consumption of strongly colored beverages such as coffee, tea and red wine. It’s also important to avoid tobacco products, not only for the sake of your veneers but for your overall health.

Do Veneers Look like Real Teeth?

The answer to this question is an emphatic “yes.” Here’s why:

  • Your dentist will work with you every step of the way to ensure a natural -looking restoration. He or she will take precise digital images of your existing teeth as well as the tissues of your mouth and lips. The lab will use this data to create your actual veneers.
  • Veneers are made from an extremely high grade of medical porcelain. This material is designed to reflect light in the same way as a set of healthy teeth.
  • Veneers not only erase years of staining or discoloration, they can also correct the appearance of poorly spaced or unusually small teeth. The result is a look that’s not only beautiful but 100% natural.

It’s important to understand that veneers are primarily a cosmetic form of treatment. They cannot compensate for teeth that are decayed, missing or severely damaged. Your dentist can give you more information.

Reversing the aging process will remain outside the reach of modern science for the foreseeable future. But modern cosmetic dentistry can erase many of the signs of aging. Make an appointment with your dentist today to learn more about veneers and other restorative treatments. The facts you learn might be all it takes to give you back your smile.
