What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over the top of a tooth and completely encases it to enhance it cosmetically or restore it structurally. While dentists create crowns from various materials, including gold, metal alloy, porcelain-fused to metal, and all-porcelain or zirconia, we prefer all-porcelain zirconia crowns. Porcelain crowns are the best at mimicking a tooth’s natural look and are a long-lasting, durable solution.

Who is a Candidate for Dental Crowns?

Every smile is unique, so the best way to find out if you’re a good candidate for dental crowns is to schedule an appointment with one of our experts. Our dentists have years of experience and will thoroughly examine your smile and recommend a treatment plan that’s just right for you. If you have a weakened, damaged, significantly chipped, decayed, or broken tooth in Frisco, contact our dental office to start your treatment journey.

How Are Dental Crowns Installed?

After your initial evaluation, you’ll return for a follow-up visit where one of our dentists carefully prepares your tooth by removing a small portion of enamel if necessary. After that, we take images and digital impressions of the affected area and send those off to a lab. Then, the lab uses these digital impressions to manufacture your crown precisely, making it the perfect fit. In the meantime, if your affected tooth is visible, we will give you a temporary crown to wear until the permanent one is ready. After one to two weeks, you will return to our office and try on your new dental crown. If you’re happy with the results and the crown fits comfortably into your smile, we permanently bond the crown to your tooth.

  • Strength: Dental crowns are built to last for at least 10 to 15 years with proper care.

Dental Crowns FAQ

Dental treatments can be complicated, but that’s why our experts are here to help every step of the way. Before you come in for a consultation, dive into some of the most frequently asked questions about dental crowns to feel confident and ready for your visit.

The vast majority of dental crowns, especially those placed on teeth in the front of the mouth, are made of materials like zirconia or porcelain. These materials are famous for their ability to mimic natural tooth enamel. In fact, light even bounces off of them in the exact same way. Additionally, we can personalize each crown to blend in with your adjacent teeth. No one outside of our dental team should be able to tell that your crown isn’t your “real” tooth!
Essentially, caring for your dental crown is the same as caring for any other tooth. Brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash every day as you normally would. Be sure to also attend a dental checkup and cleaning with us every six months. These appointments are a great way to spot problems with your crown and get them treated as soon as possible. Also, avoid using your crowned tooth (and your other teeth) as tools to open bottles, hold bags, etc. This can break, loosen, or dislodge your crown. Lastly, try not to directly chew anything particularly hard or sticky with your crown, as this could also damage or loosen your crown.
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, a crown can still fall off. While a lost crown isn’t as urgent a dental emergency as a knocked-out tooth, you should still call us as soon as you can after it happens. In the meantime, locate the crown and give it a gentle rinse. Once it’s clean, use dental wax, sugarless gum, or even a dab of toothpaste to place the crown back on the tooth. Keep in mind that this is only a temporary solution and you should see us right away so we can permanently reattach it. Until then, avoid chewing with that tooth.
When you first get your crown placed, it might take some time to get used to it. You might spend some time absentmindedly running your tongue over the crown, noticing how different it feels compared to your natural teeth. However, the longer your crown is in place, the more it will gradually start to feel like a normal part of your smile. In fact, if your crown is made of a tooth-colored material, you might even forget that you have it!
